Keystone Identities

Some identities pull a dozen habits along behind them. Find yours and you change more with less.

By Leutrim Miftaraj·Updated January 2026

One identity, many habits

Trying to change ten habits individually is exhausting and rarely holds. But some identities carry a whole cluster of behaviours with them. Become 'an athlete' and sleep, food, and training reorganise around it without a separate battle for each.

Choosing the keystone

The method's efficiency comes from picking the identity that does the most downstream work. Instead of managing behaviours, you adopt the person for whom those behaviours are simply what one does — and let the keystone carry the rest.
