Identity-Based Change, in Plain Terms

The whole model in one sitting: what it is, why it works, and how it differs from everything you've tried.

By Leutrim Miftaraj·Updated January 2026

The one-sentence version

Change who you believe you are, and the behaviour you want becomes the path of least resistance. That's the entire model. Everything else — the ENGINE Method, the K.L.A.R. framework, the Master Identity Loop — is machinery for making that sentence real.

Why it beats willpower

Willpower-based change fights your self-image and pays for the fight in effort you eventually run out of. Identity-based change updates the self-image so there's nothing left to fight. One is subtraction under strain; the other is alignment.

It's a system, not a mood

The reason the book insists on method is that insight evaporates. A procedure you can run on an unmotivated Tuesday is worth more than a brilliant realisation you can't reproduce. Identity-based change is designed to be executed, not merely understood.
