Identity-Based Change
A model of behaviour change that edits self-image first, on the premise that behaviour follows identity rather than the reverse.
Identity-based change is the central idea of Identity Over Discipline. Instead of trying to force new behaviours against an unchanged self-image, it works on the self-image directly — so the desired behaviour becomes the natural output of who you believe you are.
It stands in contrast to outcome-based and willpower-based approaches, which treat behaviour as something to be extracted through effort. Identity-based change treats behaviour as something that's produced automatically once the underlying identity is updated.
This concept appears throughout Identity Over Discipline. Read the book →
